‘Star Wars’ Gets the Blu-ray Treatment … Finally

All six live-action movies will be available in one package, set for release in fall 2011, more than five years after the debut of the high-definition disc format

“Star Wars” is finally coming to Blu-ray.

Using this weekend’s “Star Wars Celebration V” fan event in Orlando, Fla. to make its announcement, producer Lucasfilm said that all six live-action “Star Wars” movies will be released in a bonus-packed package sometime in fall 2011 through Fox Home Entertainment.

It’s the first time any of the films have been available in high-definition packaged media.

Lucasfilm is even promising “never-before-seen footage” from its archives.

“Blu-ray is the absolute best way to experience ‘Star Wars’ at home — in pristine high-definition,” said “Star Wars’ godfather George Lucas. “The films have never looked or sounded better.”

With “Star Wars” finally getting the Blu-ray treatment more than five years after the format’s middling debut, there are still a number of other classic titles that are pending.

Prime example: The Lucas-co-produced, Steven Spielberg-directed “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”
