Stephen Hawking on Potential Second Trump Term: ‘God Forbid’ (Video)

Scientist fears he “may not be welcome” in Trump’s United States

British scientist Stephen Hawking worries he “may not be welcome” in President Trump’s United States.

Hawking — a recipient of the prestigious US Franklin medal for science and the presidential medal of freedom — has been critical of Trump in the past, saying, “He is a demagogue, who seems to appeal to the lowest common denominator,” in an interview with ITV last year.

“I have many friends and colleagues [in the US] and it is still a place I like and admire in many ways… but I fear that I may not be welcome,” Hawking said on ITV’s “Good Morning Britain” on Monday morning.

Hawking said Trump winning the election is “a definite swing to a right-wing.” “Trump was elected by people who felt disenfranchised by the governing elite in a revolt against globalisation” he added. “His priority will be to satisfy his electorate, who are neither liberal nor that well informed.”

Hawking was particularly critical of Trump’s appointment of Scott Pruitt as head of the Environmental Protection Agency, calling Pruitt, “a man who does not believe that carbon dioxide causes climate change… climate change is one of the great dangers we face, and it’s one we can prevent.”

The famed scientist continued: “It affects America badly, so tackling it should win votes for [Trump’s] second term, God forbid.”
