The morning after it swept the Critics Choice Documentary Awards, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s “Summer of Soul” led all films in nominations for the International Documentary Association’s IDA Documentary Awards, which were announced on Monday.

“Summer of Love” was nominated in four categories, followed by Jessica Beshir’s “Faya Dayi” and Nicholas Bruckman’s “Not Going Quietly,” with three nods each.

In the Best Feature category, those three films will be going up against Arami Ullon’s “Nothing But the Sun,” Jonas Poher Rasmussen’s “Flee,” Nanfu Wang’s “In the Same Breath,” Jessica Earnshaw’s “Jacinta,” Angelo Madsen Minax’s “North by Current,” Chris McKim’s “Wojnarowicz: F**k You F*ggot F**ker” and Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh’s “Writing With Fire.”

The nominations were chosen by IDA juries from among 314 eligible documentary features, 137 doc shorts and 172 doc series. While the top nominees included many of the most honored nonfiction films of the year, including “Summer of Soul,” “Faya Dayi,” “Flee” and “In the Same Breath,” it was a distinctly international list that did not include such honored docs as “Ascension” (one nomination for cinematography), “The Rescue” and “Attica.”

Directing nominations went to Questlove, Beshir, Earnshaw, Rasmussen and Bruckman.

IDA members can vote in the Best Feature and Best Short categories beginning on Dec. 13. The winners will be announced on Saturday, Feb. 5 at an in-person ceremony at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles.
