CBS’ newest sitcom “Superior Donuts” doesn’t shy away from dealing with current events and hot button issues, and if president-elect Donald Trump were to get mad about it enough to tweet about it, the producers would take it.

“If we were to incite a tweet war with the President of the United States, we probably would not turn down the publicity,” executive producer Bob Daily joked during the show’s panel at the Television Critics’ Association’s press tour in Pasadena Monday.

The show has plans to do episodes about gun control, the gentrification of a Chicago neighborhood and breaking Muslim sterotypes. But don’t call it an “issue of the week show.”

“This is not going to be an issue of the week show. We will talk about issues if it comes up organically,” said EP Garrett Donovan. “We’ll also do stories about dating and about different flavors of donuts. Our approach is to follow who these characters are. To the extent we’ll look at cultural issues and issues in the news, it’ll be through the lens of who these characters are. For example, in the gun story, it will be w the effect a gun has on our characters’ lives. It’s not a political kinda thing. We’re never going to say or try to say Democratic or Repub. Keep it out of political realm, to make it more issue-based, in a cultural sense.”

For star and EP Jermaine Fowler, it’s all in the name of comedy.

“You can’t overlook those things,” he said. “You can’t not talk about these issues. It would be a disservice to comedy. That’s what the show, the pilot is about. You can’t gloss those things over, it would be like a fake show.”
