NBC's 2014 Olympics in Sochi will address Russia's new anti-gay law "if it becomes an issue"

NBC plans a documentary film about the infamous attack on Nancy Kerrigan at the 1994 Winter Olympics at Lillehammer, Norway, to air during the upcoming Winter Olympics.

The network also announced that its coverage of the 2014 Winter Olympics will launch Thursday, Feb. 6, on NBC, a week before the opening ceremonies..

Next year's games will take place in Sochi, Russia, and NBC Sports Group chairman Mark Lazarus said that the Olympics programming will address non-sports stories — including Russia's recent passage of an anti-gay law — "as they are relevant at the time of the games."

"We'll look at it at the time, because it's still unfolding. The IOC [International Olympics Committee] has addressed it with the Russian government and has assured athletes [and] fans that there will not be any issues regarding what takes place during the Games," Lazarus said. "The IOC is watching this and monitoring it very closely. We will address it if it becomes an issue. Right now it's the law of their land. Governments across the world have their own laws."

He added: "We as a company obviously believe in equality and opportunity for all."
