‘The Chi’ Season 3 Trailer: Can Lena Waithe Get an Amen? (Video)

TCA 2020: Series returns to Showtime July 5

Showtime has dropped the trailer for Season 3 of “The Chi,” and it features creator and executive producer Lena Waithe in a multi-episode arc as a Chicago mayoral candidate.

“This city wasn’t meant to be a jungle,” Waithe’s character says from a podium in the trailer. “There’s so much more than that. If you’re with me, let me get an amen.”

Showtime’s president of entertainment Gary Levine also announced at the Television Critics Association’s Winter Press Tour on Monday that the new season will return on July 5.

Common also executive produces “The Chi” along with showrunner Justin Hillian (“Snowfall”). The series is described as “a timely coming-of-age story centering on a group of residents who become linked by coincidence, but bonded by the need for connection and redemption.”

Other season three cast members include Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine (“Queen of Katwe”), Jacob Latimore (“Sleight”), Alex Hibbert (“Moonlight”), Yolonda Ross (“Treme”), Shamon Brown Jr., Michael V. Epps and Birgundi Baker.

Guest stars include Luke James (“Star,” “Little”) as Victor “Trig” Taylor, Jake’s (Epps) estranged older brother who wants to reunite his fractured family but takes an unconventional approach. Alani “La La” Anthony (“Power”) will play Dominique “Dom” Morris, a savvy businesswoman with dreams of more lucrative opportunities. Lil Rel Howery (“Get Out,” “Bird Box”) will play Zeke Remnick, the owner of Sonny’s (guest star Cedric Young) building who cares less about the community than the bottom line, and Kandi Burruss (“The Real Housewives of Atlanta”) as Roselyn Perry, the estranged wife of Douda (guest star Curtiss Cook), back at his side to influence his political agenda and to help herself, according to Showtime.

Aaron Kaplan (“A Million Little Things,” “The Neighborhood”), Rick Famuyiwa (“Dope”), Derek Dudley and Shelby Stone of Freedom Road Productions and Jet Wilkinson all also serve as executive producers. Fox 21 Television Studios produces.

Season 3 of “The Chi” premieres July 5 at 10/9c on Showtime.
