10-episode debut season begins on Aug. 8

Cinemax has ordered Season 2 of “The Knick” before the show has even debuted. The announcement was made Thursday at the pay-TV channel’s Television Critics Association panel.

Season 1 of the Clive Owen dark drama, from executive producer Steven Soderbergh, premieres on Aug. 8. Soderbergh directed the entire 10-episode first season.

The show follows the surgeons, nurses and staff of the Knickerbocker Hospital in 1900. Eve Hewson and Andre Holland also star; Jack Amiel and Michael Begler co-created the series, as well as write and executive produce.

“The Knick” was not the first show of the day to get an early second season renewal: “Matador” from Robert Rodriguez‘s El Rey Network also announced a Season 2 at TCA.
