Disney+ has wrapped filming on Jon Favreau’s live-action “Star Wars” TV series “The Mandalorian,” the new streaming service announced Wednesday.

Starring Nick Nolte, Werner Herzog, Gina Carano, and Pedro Pascal as the titular character, “The Mandalorian” follows the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic. The cast also includes Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Swallow, Carl Weathers and Omid Abtahi.

The series is set in the time period between “Return of the Jedi” and “The Force Awakens.” In “Star Wars” lore, Mandalorians made the iconic armor that bounty hunter Boba Fett and his “father” Jango Fett wore in the films. Boba was technically an unaltered clone of Jango.

Bryce Dallas Howard, Taika Waititi, Rick Famuyiwa and Deborah Chow directed episodes of the series, with Dave Filoni (“Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” “Star Wars Rebels”) helming the premiere. “Black Panther” composer and recent Oscar winner Ludwig Göransson will write the score.

The series, which doesn’t yet have a premiere date, will air on Disney’s upcoming streaming service Disney+, which is expected to launch toward the end of 2019.

The series is part of a growing list of Disney+ original series that borrow from the company’s massive catalog, including a second “Star Wars” series following Diego Luna’s “Rogue One” character. Marvel Studios is developing several standalone series starring big-screen characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), and Bucky Barns aka the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan).

Disney is also developing a series that will star several of its iconic villains like Ursula from “The Little Mermaid” and The Wicked Queen from “Snow White.”

Disney+ will also feature TV series versions of “High Fidelity” (with Zoe Kravitz), Pixar’s “Monsters Inc” and “High School Musical.” On the film side, a live-action reboot of “Lady and the Tramp” will star Tessa Thompson, Justin Theroux and Janelle Monae.
