‘The Walking Dead’: Hear Carl’s Last Words in New Season 8 Trailer (Video)

I’m not crying, you’re crying

(Warning: spoilers ahead for Season 8)

All “Walking Dead” fans can talk about until Season 8 returns is the impending death of Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs)–and now we have more fuel for our teary conversations.

In a new trailer released Friday, we get to hear some of Carl’s very last words before he succumbs to his zombie bite–and the OG Alexandria crew returns to the Hilltop without him.

At the beginning of the trailer, above, we see Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) leaning over Carl, who is looking very ill.

“You put away your gun, how you stopped fighting,” Carl says, probably referencing the (brief) period when Rick tended the garden more than fighting zombies. “It was right. It still is. You can still be like that again.”

“I can’t be who I was,” Rick says back. “It’s different now.”

Then the trailer bounces off Carl for a bit, showing the Hilltop and a menacing-as-ever Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan).

At the end, we hear Carl’s voice once more as the shot ends on Rick (though there’s a chance he could be talking to younger sister Judith from what he’s saying): “Before mom died, she told me that I was gonna beat this world. You will.”

If that doesn’t pull at your heartstrings, I don’t know what will.

Watch the return of Season 8 on AMC Feb. 25 at 9 p.m. with an extended runtime.
