Ratings: ‘Timeless’ Rises in Season 2 Finale – But Is It Enough to Save NBC Series?

Fan backlash saved one-and-done drama last year

“Timeless” Season 2 — and possibly series finale — aired Sunday night, bringing with it a major cliffhanger and slight uptick in overnight Nielsen numbers.

The Abigail Spencer-led drama rose from a 0.5 to a 0.6 in adults 18-49 and in viewers from 2.2 million to 2.4 million, over last week.

However, it’s not clear yet whether that growth in the key demo and eyeballs will ultimately matter when NBC entertainment boss Bob Greenblatt decides whether time has run out for the show. After all, the Peacock already brought it back after last year’s cancelation due to fan backlash — but the numbers didn’t get much better in its sophomore year.

ABC was first in ratings with a 1.3 rating/6 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and second in total viewers with an average of 6.2 million, according to preliminary numbers. At 7 p.m., “America’s Funniest Home Videos” landed a 1.2/6 and 5.7 million viewers. At 8, “American Idol” scored a 1.6/7 and 7.8 million viewers. “Deception” at 10 received a 0.7/3 and 3.5 million viewers.

CBS and Fox tied for second in ratings with a 0.7/3.

CBS was first in viewers with 7.3 million. At 7, “60 Minutes” took a 0.8/4 and 7.5 million viewers. “NCIS: LA” at 9 got a 0.8/3 and 7.3 million viewers. At 10, “Madam Secretary” managed a 0.6/2 and 5.9 million viewers.

Fox was fourth in viewers with 1.7 million. Following a repeat, “Bob’s Burgers” at 7:30 settled for a 0.7/3 and 1.5 million viewers. At 8, “The Simpsons” posted a 0.9/4 and 2.1 million viewers. At 8:30, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” had a 0.8/3 and 1.8 million viewers. “Family Guy” at 9 put up a 1.0/4 and 2.3 million viewers. At 9:30, another “Bob’s Burgers” received a 0.8/3 and 1.9 million viewers.

NBC was fourth in ratings with a 0.6/3 and third in viewers with 2.7 million. At 7, the season finale of “Genius Junior” managed a 0.5/2 and 2.8 million viewers. The two-hour season closer for “Timeless” at 9 got a 0.6/2 and 2.4 million viewers.

Univision was fifth in ratings with a 0.4/2 and in viewers with 975,000.

Telemundo was sixth in ratings with a 0.3/1 and in viewers with 794,000.
