Tinder Campaign Leads to New Interracial Couple Emojis

A dozen new heterosexual and same-sex interracial emojis will debut in 2019

Emojis just got a little more realistic.

The Unicode Consortium, the organization in charge of emoji standards, is set to add a wide range of new interracial couple emojis in response to an online petition from Tinder that grabbed more than 50,000 signatures in the last year.

“It may seem like there’s an emoji for everything, but that’s not the case,” Tinder said in its petition. “While emojis for people of color and emojis for same-sex couples both became a reality in 2015, one group of people is still excluded from emoji representation: interracial couples. Isn’t it time all love was represented?”

Tinder also promoted its push for interracial emojis with the hashtag #RepresentLove.

“Tinder advocates for the freedom of people to live how they want to live and love who they want to love,” Tinder chief marketing officer Jenny Campbell told USA Today.

Up to this point, couples emojis only came in the standard yellow option on iOS. You can check out the new interracial couple emojis below:

Unicode did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment on when the emojis will officially be released, but they’re expected to debut this year, along with another 230 emojis set to be released this year.
