Bell, who had served as executive producer of "Today" since 2005, had previously spent 16 years with NBC Sports & Olympics, and has worked on every Olympic Games that NBC has produced since 1992.

In his new position, Bell will have editorial and creative control over NBC’s Games.

"There is no doubt that Jim is the right person to be our Olympic production leader into the future,” Lazarus said. “His professionalism was unmatched in leading the London Olympics to record levels. Jim has worked with the best in the Olympic television world, and we’re excited to have him join us as the full-time executive producer.”

The official announcement follows reports earlier this week that Bell would make the jump to NBC Sports. According to the report, Bell, who was blamed for the messy firing of "Today" co-host Ann Curry earlier this year, will be replaced by Alexandra Wallace, a senior vice president at NBC News.

NBC has not yet announced Bell's replacement, whether it's Wallace or otherwise.
