Tom Hanks Is Going Down With the Ship – and Pirates – in ‘Captain Phillips’ Trailer (Video)

The film is based on the true story of the 2009 hijacking of the MV Maersk Alabama

The new trailer for Tom Hanks' "Captain Phillips" trailer stormed internet-connected computer vessels on Wednesday.

In the clip, Phillips (Hanks) is taken hostage on his own ship by pirates — the modern day ones — not the "of the Caribbean" kind.

The film is based on the true story of the 2009 hijacking of the MV Maersk Alabama by Somali pirates. It was the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in 200 years.

Phillips allows himself to be taken in an attempt to save the lives of his crew during the first preview. But the "bad guys" may not be as bad as they seem — their decisions in life are not necessarily those of free men.

Catherine Keener also stars as Andrea Phillips. The movie comes into port Oct. 11.
