Tom Hardy on 'Mad Max' Sequels: 'I'm Waiting for the Call to Come'

Tom Hardy says those “Mad Max” sequels are still on.

“Yeah I believe so!” the actor told TheWrap when asked about whether they would be happening. “I don’t know when that starts, but I believe that’s in the books. There’s a couple of those floating around. I’m waiting for the call to come.”

“It was so good, man,” Hardy reminisced.

In Jan. 2016, “Mad Max: Fury Road” director George Miller told TheWrap that contrary to recent reports, he is far from done with the franchise, which has endured in the public consciousness since 1979.

Asked whether he was truly done with “Mad Max” and the post-apocalyptic universe the character inhabits, Miller said he was misquoted after traveling for 27 hours.

“That was a completely garbled interview. I was in New York and it was so noisy and the journalist was asking me questions on a red carpet at the National Board of Review,” he said. “She completely got the wrong fragments of information that were just not true. I said no, [another ‘Mad Max’ movie] will not be next, and she took that to mean I never wanted to make another ‘Mad Max.’ It won’t necessarily be next, but I have two more stories.”

In the past, the director has said the backstory of Charlize Theron’s character, Imperator Furiosa, would be “pretty interesting” to explore in a future movie.

In September, reports surfaced that a sequel for “Mad Max” would be in the works, with Theron and Hardy reprising their roles. The sequel would be titled “Max Max: The Wasteland” and would focus on Theron’s character. Even Theron has said she would love to reprise her character.

The film won six Oscars including Best Achievement in Film Editing and Costume Design. It was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Director. The film grossed $378 million worldwide on a reported production budget of $150 million. It resonated with critics and audiences all over the world, scoring a 97 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film appeared on numerous Top 10 lists and was named Best Picture by many regional critics groups.

No sequel has been officially confirmed by Warner Bros.
