Toshiba Enters Blu-ray Market

After backing failed HD DVD, company will launch player.

Toshiba, which was once the major proponent of the now-defunct HD DVD format, will be joining the other side: Blu-ray.

CNET is reporting that, according to Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun,  the technology giant is getting ready to launch its first Blu-ray player.

Blu-ray knocked HD DVD out of the marketplace in 2008; Toshiba’s player supposedly will be ready by Jan.

The newspaper reported over the weekend that Toshiba had been thinking of developing another technology to combat Blu-ray but thew in the towel based on the popularity of Blu-ray.

Toshiba fought hard in its two-year battle promoting HD DVD over Blu-ray, finally admitting defeat in early last year.
