‘True Detective’ Teaser: Mahershala Ali’s Memory Is a Mess in First Look at Season 3 (Video)

Third chapter of HBO crime drama set for January 2019 premiere

Uh, you doing OK, Mahershala Ali?

On Sunday, HBO released the teaser for Season 3 of “True Detective,” which included a first look at Ali in action on the next chapter of the Nic Pizzolatto drama. Actually, a first look at multiple versions of Ali — all of whom look haunted.

“Before you ever knew me, I wasn’t scared much,” Ali’s Wayne Hays, a state police detective in the Ozarks, says in a voiceover on the 1-minute, 11-second clip. “I wasn’t a fearful man. Things I’ve seen, things I know, wouldn’t do anything but cause harm. My whole brain’s a bunch of missing pieces.”

The footage then jumps between Hays as a young man and an old man, preparing viewers for the mystery that will unfold in different timelines — much like the series’ first season — when “True Detective” returns in January 2019.

Here’s the official logline for the coming season, courtesy of HBO: The next installment of “True Detective” tells the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.

“True Detective” Season 3 stars Ali, Carmen Ejogo, Mamie Gummer and Scoot McNairy, and is directed by Pizzolatto, Jeremy Saulnier (“Blue Ruin”)  and Daniel Sackheim (“The Leftovers”).

Season 3 of “True Detective” will premiere in January 2019 on HBO.
