Official Trump War Room, a Twitter account maintained by President Trump’s reelection campaign, on Saturday denounced CNN for “falsely claiming President Trump called Meghan Markle ‘nasty’” — including an audio clip of the president doing just that.

“Fake News CNN is at it again,” the tweet from Official Trump War Room began, before inviting followers to “Listen for yourself!”

But in the attached audio from Trump’s Friday interview with the U.K. paper The Sun ahead of his state visit to the U.K., the president clearly says, “I didn’t know she was nasty” when asked about how Markle, an American-born actress who became Duchess of Sussex after marrying Prince Harry, had said in 2016 she would move to Canada if Trump were elected.

The quote even appears in the subtitles of the clip used in the tweet.

Needless to say, many journalists and other members of the blue-check Twitterati were quick to pounce on the apparent self-own.

“He actually calls her ‘nasty’ in this audio. That is the exact word he uses,” Washington Post political columnist Karen Tumulty noted on Twitter. “Who is running that war room? George Orwell?”

“TFW when the quote you’re denying is in the audio you’re tweeting,” New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman tweeted, using online lingo for “that feeling when.”
