In a meeting with parents, teachers and students affected by school shootings over the past two decades, President Donald Trump said Wednesday he is considering arming teachers with concealed guns.
The president, a strong supporter of gun rights, has been under increased scrutiny after last week’s mass shooting that took 17 lives at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
But Trump’s solution to weaponize educators triggered widespread condemnation throughout the Twitterverse, with one calling it “asinine.”
“Absolutely asinine that the solution to the problem of gun violence is…more guns! In what realm of logic does that make any sense?” asked one. “This s—show Trump roundtable is just that- a damn s—show. Did the NRA sponsor this? Did they hand out talking points? Unbelievable.”
“So after hearing from all these students and parents who have witnessed gun massacres, all @realDonaldTrump got out of this exercise is what the @NRA already [fed] him: more guns in schools and arming teachers,” Tweeted MSNBC host Joy Reid.
Even “Jesus Christ” chimed in, telling his followers on Twitter:
Arm the teachers.
More gun sales. Trump wins. NRA win.
Schools. I promise you, I absolutely promise you will not win.
You have my word.
