Trumpaggedon: Traffic Hell as President Briefly Makes L.A.’s Gridlock Look Worse Than DC’s

POTUS’ arrival in LA disrupted already infamous traffic

Donald Trump might have lost Los Angeles County to Hillary Clinton by more than 1.5 million votes, but he got his revenge with a secretive presidential visit that snarled traffic from Santa Monica to Downtown LA.

After a stop in San Diego to tour prototypes for his quixotic border wall — and apparently propose militarizing NASA — Trump flew to L.A. to attend fundraisers at undisclosed locations. And as the presidential motorcade traveled north from LAX to wherever on the West Side Trump is going, drivers on the freeways along his route were treated for at least half an hour to a horrifically-worse-than-normal traffic hellscape. Spoiler alert: they hated it.

Trump isn’t exactly beloved in Hollywood, where entertainment industry figures criticize him constantly. And they had plenty of time to think about how much they dislike him on Tuesday as they sat stuck in traffic.

Earlier in the day Los Angeles police warned commuters “to be aware that Downtown Los Angeles is extremely congested due to the Presidential visit,” and urged drivers to avoid 5th Street to Olympic Blvd and Union Ave to Grand Ave, and 7th Street and Figueroa Street were closed to all car and bike traffic Tuesday afternoon.

LAPD released a statement earlier on Tuesday saying that police will be “heavily deployed through the city to ensure the safe transport of the president and secure locations he will be visiting.”

Those locations, however, aren’t for commuters to be made aware. “Every administration brings with it unique challenges and new protocols, and unfortunately out of an abundance of caution many details about this visit are being withheld for security reasons,” LAPD’s statement said.

LAPD spokesman Josh Rubenstein did say that the president will be commuting somewhere between Beverly Hills and the Westside, according to Los Angeles Daily News. The LA Times reported that the president arrived in Santa Monica just before 4 p.m., and that he arrived at a “private residence” around 4:25 p.m. His fundraiser is at 6:30 p.m., and he’ll leave that for the unknown place he is staying overnight at 8:05 p.m.

Trump’s visit isn’t doing LA’s traffic any favors, which has been the worst in the world for six years in a row.
