Happy birthday, Twitter!
The social messaging juggernaut — used by everyone from journalists to world leaders to Charlie Sheen — was launched five years ago. The first human tweet, by co-founder Jack Dorsey, was published by March 21, 2006. (Dorsey's first tweet: “inviting coworkers.”)
The service now averages 140 million tweets per day — one per character! — up from roughly an average of 50 million a year ago. (About 177 million tweets were published on March 11, the day of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.)
There are also more than 400 full-time employees working at Twitter, up from a handful in 2006.
