Tyler Oakley Tells ‘Ellen’ How He Helped Ricky Martin Come Out (Video)

YouTube sensation also moves his mom to tears and describes his first trip to White House

Tyler Oakley has “the luckiest job in the world,” according to the YouTube sensation himself.

During an appearance on “Ellen,” the online personality shared how a hobby of sharing his real life stories on the streaming platform has led to it becoming his full-time job, and even described one time when a video he made helped a celebrity he was a fan of.

“Back in like 2008, I made a video about the importance of being authentic to yourself and about coming out and how you should wait till your ready and things like that,” Oakley said. “And a few years later I got a tweet one morning on National Coming Out Day and it was from Ricky Martin. And he said that that video was part of the reason why he felt ready to share his story.”

Oakley brought his mother, whom he calls “Queen Jackie,” to the show, moving her almost to tears as she sat in the audience, and also described the first time he was invited to interview President Obama at the White House.

True to his online personality, Oakley made sure to have some fun while in the Oval Office.

“So he was giving us a tour of his office and he was telling us about his desk and there was like a moment of silence where I was like, ‘Okay, nobody’s saying anything — this is my chance to make an impact and say something he’ll remember,’” he said. “And I was like, ‘Cute desk.’”
