Universal Announces 2011 Date for Next ‘Fast and Furious’ Movie

Studio also moves “SNL” spin-off “MacGruber” to a less crowded May 21 release

Universal announced a June 10, 2011 release date for the fifth installment of its venerable “Fast and Furious” franchise.

Stars Vin Diesel and Paul Walker will both return to the franchise, the last installment of which grossed $343 million at the global box office last spring.

Meanwhile, even a former Green Beret, Navy SEAL and Army Ranger with 16 Purple Hearts and three Congressional Medals of Honor would box office competition on April 23 too thick.

With that in mind, Universal also announced that it’s moving its “Saturday Night Live” inspired satire “MacGruber” to May 21.

April 23 already featured the debut of Oliver Stone’s much anticipated “Wall Street” follow-up, as well as Joel Silver action film “The Losers” starring “Avatar’s” Zoe Saldana. Then, last month, CBS Films moved Jennifer Lopez romantic comedy “The Back-Up Plan” into that frame, too.

May 21 will feature the premiere of DreamWorks Animation’s “Shrek Forever After,” but little else that might derail a young-adult comedy.
