The Washington Post editorial board blasted President Trump for his comments about the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia in a powerful piece titled, “The nation can only weep.”

Trump sent viewers into a tizzy during a Trump Tower press conference on Tuesday when he said “both sides” were responsible for the violence in Charlottesville. He also claimed there were some “very fine people” attending the white nationalist rally. The press conference has been widely condemned by politicians and media members.

The Post’s editorial board called Tuesday’s press conference a “great day” for former KKK leader David Duke and “racists everywhere” who benefit from Trump’s remarks.

“The president of the United States all but declared that he has their backs,” the board wrote.

Heather Heyer was killed over the weekend when an accused white supremacist plowed into a group of counter-protestors demonstrating against neo-Nazis and white supremacists. At least 19 others were injured in the horrific attack.

“That car in Charlottesville did not kill or wound just the 20 bodies it struck. It damaged the nation. Mr. Trump not only failed to help the country heal; he made the wound wider and deeper,” The Post’s editorial board wrote.
