Watch Broadway Stars Crush ‘What the World Needs Now Is Love’ at Democratic Convention (Video)

Kristen Bell, Darren Criss, Debra Messing, Idina Menzel, Audra McDonald, Rosie Perez and many more perform the benefit song for the Orlando shooting victims

Delegates were swaying back and fourth while singing along to a live rendition of “What the World Needs Now Is Love” by a variety of Broadway stars at the Democratic Convention in Philadelphia on Wednesday.

The song fired up the packed crowd and received one of the biggest ovations of the week, with the room chanting, “Love trumps hates” when the song ended.

Kristen Bell, Darren Criss, Alice Ripley, Ben Vereen, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Debra Messing, Idina Menzel, Audra McDonald, Rosie Perez were joined by over a dozen other Broadway stars for the powerful track that was recently recorded as a benefit song for the Orlando shooting victims. Proceeds from the June recording go to the LGBT Center of Central Florida that is coping with the aftermath with the June 12 massacre at the gay nightclub Pulse that claimed 50 lives.

The more than 40 Broadway stars added to an already impressive list of speakers on Wednesday night including President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, Michael Bloomberg and Tim Kaine. The evening will also feature appearances from actors Angela Bassett and Sigourney Weaver, Oscar-nominated director Lee Daniels, Star Jones and a performance by Lenny Kravitz.
