‘Westworld’ Heads Back Into Production Next Month; Expect Season 3 in 2020

TCA 2019: Casey Bloys tells us when Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s sci-fi series will unfreeze all motor functions

Bring yourselves back online, “Westworld” fans, because we now have confirmation Season 3 will begin production next month. Actually, you might need to freeze some motor functions again, because what we don’t know is exactly when you’ll be headed back to Sweetwater.

When TheWrap spoke with HBO programming chief Casey Bloys during the cabler’s day at the Television Critics Association press tour Friday, he told us that filming on the Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy-created sci-fi series will definitely begin in March, but wouldn’t confirm whether or not it will make it to air by the end of 2019.

However, it is safe to expect “Westworld” won’t return with its next batch of episodes until 2020, due to the gap between Seasons 1 and 2 and the amount of time the large-scale series takes to produce and the post-production process.

The Evan Rachel Wood and Jeffrey Wright-led show wrapped its second season last June after debuting the 10-episode installment in April. That premiere came over a year and a half after Season 1’s run ended in October 2016.

At the end of the Season 2 finale, “The Passenger,” three of the Hosts officially entered the real world in our central timeline: Dolores (Wood), Bernard (Wright) — thanks to Dolores’ decision to bring him back — and whoever the heck is inside the Charlotte Hale-shaped one (played by Tessa Thompson) that Dolores inhabited before she rebuilt herself.

“It was always the plan to explore the real world and we have Dolores there, Bernard’s there and a creature that is certainly inhabiting Hale’s body is there [laughs],” Joy told TheWrap in June. “So we’ll come to know more of who ‘Hale’ is. There are three Hosts out in the world and next season will really be an exploration of what they find and who they become.”

Joy also clarified that there is someone in Hale who isn’t Dolores at the end there, cause Dolores is now back in Dolores, saying, “Yes, that’s one of the things we’ll explore next season.”
