Taking advantage of cultural holidays in several Asian markets, Warner Bros.’ “Wonder Woman” got off to a strong box office start on Wednesday, grossing $6.3 million six international markets, including Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong, and Indonesia.
In Taiwan, where the film opened on Tuesday to coincide with the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, “Wonder Woman” scored the third highest WB opening ever, beating that of “Batman v. Superman” last year. The film also crushed the opening day totals of several Marvel films, including “Thor,” “Captain America: The First Avenger,” and most notably, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.” “Wonder Woman” also surpassed those films’ opening day cumes in Hong Kong and Korea as well.
The blockbuster opens in 55 markets this weekend, with domestic release kicking off Thursday night with preview screenings in 3,500+ locations. At the start of the week, independent trackers had the film scoring an opening in the low $90 million range, though some trackers now believe it could pass $100 million this weekend after rave critical reception. “Wonder Woman” currently has a 92 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
