‘Yellowstone’ Season 5 Trailer: Governor John Dutton Prepares for War (Video)

Taylor Sheridan’s megahit modern western returns to Paramount Network Nov. 13

In the first trailer for “Yellowstone” Season 5, John Dutton (Kevin Costner) is now officially a triple threat: Cowboy, gangster and Montana governor. But as the new season’s tagline says, “power comes at a price,” and that price appears to be either a literal or metaphorical war with the Dutton family’s many, many enemies.

The series returns to Paramount Network on Nov. 13. See the trailer at the top of the page now.

Right off the bat, the trailer reminds us that “Yellowstone” runs on nonstop menace with John taking his oath while getting sworn into office. When he gets to the part where he says “enemies, both foreign and domestic,” the camera makes a point of lingering on three of them: His estranged son Jamie (Wes Bently); his rival, occasional ally-of-convenience, and Broken Rock Tribal Chairman Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham); and Caroline Warner (Jacki Weaver), the CEO of Market Equities.

Next, he fires his entire staff and makes his daughter Beth (Kelly Reilly) his new chief of staff, which might not be as wise a decision as he thinks. Beth’s smart and ruthless, but she’s also the reason Warner is an enemy of the Duttons — recall Warner fired Beth for misusing company resources to pursue personal vendettas and promised to destroy the Duttons with lawsuits? Well, we see her ordering someone to “ruin them. Starting with her.” Yikes. Luckily Beth is still married to Rip (Cole Hauser), the most lovable violence distributor in the west.

Meanwhile, when we last saw Jamie, the Duttons had discovered not only that Jamie’s biological father, Garrett, had arranged the attempted assassinations that ended Season 3, but that Jamie knew about it. Beth then forced Jamie to kill Garrett and dump the body at the train station, giving her seemingly permanent leverage over him. In the trailer, Jamie seems cowed, but given how much of a resentful screw-up he is, maybe not all is as it seems.

And of course, it wouldn’t be “Yellowstone” without the yet more plot involving the rocky relationship between Kayce (Luke Grimes) and his wife, Broken Rock Tribe member Monica (Kelsey Asbille) — that now might even be supernaturally doomed. “When I said we give everything to the land,” she tells him, “I do mean everything.”

Produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios, “Yellowstone” was co-created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson. Alongside Sheridan and Linson, Art Linson, Kevin Costner, David C. Glasser, Bob Yari and Stephen Kay are executive producers.

Alongside Costner, Grimes, Reilly, Bentley, Hauser, Asbille, Birmingham and Weaver, Season 5 features Brecken Merrill, Forrie Smith, Denim Richards, Ian Bohen, Finn Little and Ryan Bingham – plus Josh Lucas as young John Dutton, Kylie Rogers and Kyle Red Silverstein.

In addition, Mo Brings Plenty, Wendy Moniz, Jen Landon and Kathryn Kelly have all been promoted to series regulars, and the show has added Kai Caster, Lainey Wilson, Lilli Kay and Dawn Olivieri.
