After nearly 10 years since the first film, Sony Pictures is reviving “Zombieland” for a sequel, and the original cast is coming along for the ride.

“Zombieland,” which came out in 2009, starred Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin, all of whom are reprising their roles in the “Zombieland 2.”

Ruben Fleischer, who directed the first film, is returning to the director’s chair, after helming another big blockbuster for Sony — the Tom Hardy-led “Venom.”

Fleischer is teaming up with the original “Zombieland” writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, who also worked on both “Deadpool” movies.

“This is one of those projects that fans have wanted to see happen for a long time – and no one wanted to see it happen more than Emma, Woody, Jesse, and Abigail,” said Sanford Panitch, president, Columbia Pictures in a statement. “These are some of the most in-demand actors and I think they are making this movie because they love these characters. We are thrilled Ruben was willing to come back to direct the sequel, as his work on Venom has been truly amazing.”

In “Zombieland 2,” comic mayhem stretches from the White House to the heartland, as the zombie slayers must face off against many new kinds of zombies that have evolved since the first movie. But most of all, they have to face the growing pains of their own snarky, makeshift family.

The film is set to begin production in January. Gavin Polone returns as producer; Reese and Wernick will also executive produce, with Lauren Abrahams overseeing the project for the studio

It’s expected to be released in October, 2019 — the 10th anniversary of the first film.
