‘300’ Sequel Opens No. 1 in France and Australia

“Rise of an Empire” debut tops first-day grosses of the original by 20 percent in France, Warner Bros. says

“300: Rise of an Empire” is off to a fast start overseas, where it will open in 58 foreign markets this weekend.

Warner Bros. And Legendary Pictures’ sequel to their 2007 breakout sword-and-sandals saga opened at No. 1 in France with $1.8 million Wednesday, exceeding the first day of the original film by 20 percent, according to distributor Warner Bros.

“Rise of an Empire” opened in Belgium and the French side of Switzerland on Wednesday as well. It grossed$195,000 on 80 screens (including sneaks) in Belgium, and $36,000 on 21 screens in French Switzerland. Both of those numbers top “300” by more than 50 percent, the studio reported.

The 3D adventure saga is also on pace to take the top spot in Australia, after taking in $536,000 from 470 locations on Thursday. It also opened in Germany, Italy and Russia on Thursday.

The R-rated “Rise of an Empire” opens in 3,470 U.S. theaters on Friday.
