ABC Family’s ‘Shadowhunters’ Casts Alan Van Sprang as Main Villain

“Reign” alum will play Valentine in a recurring role

ABC Family’s “Shadowhunters” has found its Big Bad.

“Reign” star Alan Van Sprang has joined the cast to play Valentine, the show’s main villain, the network announced Friday.

Other actors already cast on the show include Katherine McNamara, Dominic Sherwood, Alberto Rosende, Emeraude Toubia, Isaiah Mustafa and Matthew Daddario.

“Shadowhunters,” the straight-to-series adaptation of the “Mortal Instruments” series of YA novels by Cassandra Clare, will follow 18-year-old Clary, who finds out on her birthday that she is not who she thinks she is, but rather comes from a long line of Shadowhunters — human-angel hybrids who hunt down demons. When her mother Jocelyn is kidnapped, Clary is thrown into the world of demon hunting with mysterious Shadowhunter Jace (Sherwood) and her best friend Simon (Rosende).

Van Sprang will recur in the role of Valentine, described as a brilliant, cunning, and dangerously handsome Shadowhunter wielding immense power. His stoic, charming and confident presence allows him control over his many followers. To seek out what he wants, Valentine executes anyone in his way, never thinking twice about it.

“Shadowhunters” is produced by Constantin Film and executive produced by Ed Decter and McG, who will also direct the first episode.

Van Sprang most recently played King Henry on The CW’s “Reign” and also had a lead role on the network’s “Cheerleader Death Squad” pilot, which was ultimately not picked up. He is represented by APA.
