Anthony Mackie has clarified that he was not actually endorsing Donald Trump when he appeared to throw his support behind the Republican presidential frontrunner during an interview with BET on Monday.

“Sorry Donald, that wasn’t an endorsement,” the “Our Brand Is Crisis” star said on Twitter Monday afternoon. “Just a bad attempt at a joke, I guess?”

The actor drew buzz and backlash when during an interview, he was asked if he would rather run Trump’s or Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.

“Trump’s an easy sell,” the actor said. “When you look at Trump, he’s an easy sell because you can sell him as the guy who worked his way up from nothing. And I think if you’re a ‘pull yourself up by your bootstraps’ candidate, people would identify with that.”

When asked if that constituted an endorsement of Trump, Mackie answered, “I’m on the bandwagon. I’m drinking the Kool-Aid!”
