Avett Brothers Play Prince’s ‘When Doves Cry’ at Thursday Night Show (Video)

Folk group pays tribute to the late superstar during set at the Chicago Theatre

The show must go on, as the saying goes, even when a musician with a seemingly all-encompassing impact on the world of entertainment passes away.

And so at the Avett Brothers show in Chicago Thursday night, the folk band did what a lot of musical acts did and will do in the coming days, weeks months and years: pay tribute with song.

After playing their song “Pretty Girl from Annapolis,” the Avett Brothers seamlessly switched gears into a rendition of “When Doves Cry” (3:45 mark). The move was met with rousing cheers from the crowd. Once the initial rush subsides, you can hear the crowd singing along with the Avetts. It’s goosebump-inducing.

The Avetts were of course just one of many groups and artists and others paying tribute. Prince’s death is a big cultural moment, and folks like Justin Timberlake, Mike Tyson, The New Yorker and even Pornhub have paid their respects to the late legend.

Prince Rogers Jackson was found dead in his Paisley Park Studios compound in Minnesota Thursday. The cause of death is not known — though the local sheriff says it’s not a suicide — and an autopsy has been performed by local medical examiners, but test results will take some time to come in. That wait for conclusive results could last weeks.
