The dramas "Breaking Bad," "Boardwalk Empire" and "Homeland" and the comedy series "Modern Family" have each received three nominations from the Writers Guild of America, which announced its television, news, radio, promotional writing and graphic animation nominees on Tuesday.

Following on the heels of the Producers Guild by only minutes, the WGA singled out many of the same series, though it made more adventurous choices in honoring series like "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Louie," "Breaking Bad" and "Homeland" over PGA nominees "The Big Bang Theory," "Glee," "Dexter" and "Mad Men."

Both "Game of Thrones" and "Homeland" were nominated in both the Drama Series and New Series categories; the latter series also received a nomination in the Episodic Drama category, which singles out specific episodes rather than an entire series.

"Boardwalk Empire," "Breaking Bad" and "Modern Family" each received a nomination for the series, and two separate nods in the episodic category.

Nominees for Drama Series are HBO's "Boardwalk Empire" and "Game of Thrones," AMC's "Breaking Bad," Showtime's "Homeland" and CBS's "The Good Wife."

Comedy Series category nominees are NBC's "30 Rock" and "Parks and Recreation," ABC's "Modern Family," HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and FX's "Louie."

New Series nominees are Showtime's "Episodes" and "Homeland," HBO's "Game of Thrones," AMC's "The Killing" and Fox's "New Girl."

The WGA Awards will be presented on Sunday, February 9 at simultaneous ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York.
