They might as well call them "Tyler Perry's Image Awards" this year, because the actor/writer/director dominated nominations for the NAACP's 42nd annual awards when they were announced on Wednesday morning.
Perry's film "For Colored Girls" led the pack with seven nominations, while his "Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too?" added four and his TV shows "Tyler Perry's House of Payne" and "Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns" received multiple nominations, including six for acting and others in the writing and Comedy Series categories.
Nominees for Best Picture, besides the two Perry films, include "Just Wright," "The Book of Eli" and "The Kids Are All Right." Nominated directors include Perry for "For Colored Girls," Geoffrey Sax for "Frankie & Alice," George Tillman Jr. for "Faster," Tanya Hamilton for "Night Catches Us" and the Hughes Brothers for "The Book of Eli."
Acting nominees include Denzel Washington, Jaden Smith, Morgan Freeman, Halle Berry, Queen Latifah and Zoe Saldana – and in the Supporting Actress category, where Jill Scott from "Why Did I Get Married Too" is up against four actresses from "For Colored Girls": Anika Noni Rose, Kimberly Elise, Phylicia Rashad and Whoopi Goldberg.
The Image Awards honor accomplishments of people of color in the fields of television, music, literature and film. The awards ceremony will take place on Friday, March 4, at the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills.
