“How to Train Your Dragon,” “Country Strong” also win MPSE's Golden Reel Awards; “The Pacific” takes top TV honors
The Motion Picture Sound Editors gave two of their seven feature film awards to "Inception" at the annual Golden Reel Awards Sunday night in downtown Los Angeles.
Other films honored by the MPSE include "The Social Network" (Dialogue and ADR in a Feature Film), "How to Train Your Dragon" (Feature Film Animation), "Country Strong" (Musical Film) "Micmacs" (Foreign Language) and "Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage" (Documentary).
The awards came one day after the Cinema Audio Society gave top sound-mixing honors to "True Grit." Together, the MPSE and the CAS cover sound mixing and sound editing, the two separate categories in which the Academy honors sound.
Because the MPSE gives its sound-mixing awards in so many different categories, the Golden Reel Awards seldom give a reliable take on Oscar voting. Over the past decade, the group's Sound Effects and Foley category has had the closest match with Oscar Sound Editing winners, but they only coincided four out of the 10 years. (Two of those four years, the film that won the Oscar won both the FX & Foley category and the DX & ADR category at the MPSE.)
In the television categories, the HBO miniseries "The Pacific" won a pair of awards, while the MPSE also saluted "Boardwalk Empire," "Glee" and "The Walking Dead," among others.
Film editor Walter Murch and producer Brian Grazer were given honorary awards.
