‘Broken Circle Breakdown’ Leads European Film Awards Nominations

“Blue is the Warmest Color” is nominated for film and director, but no other categories

The Belgian movie “The Broken Circle Breakdown,” which mixes bluegrass music with the story of a relationship under stress, received five nominations to lead all films in nominations for the 26th European Film Awards, the European Film Academy announced on Saturday at the Seville European Film Festival.

“The Great Beauty” was second with four nominations, while “The Best Offer,” “In the House,” “Oh Boy!” and “Anna Karenina” received three.

The year’s most talked-about foreign-language film, the sexually explicit Cannes Palme d’Or winner “La Vie D’Adele: Chapitres 1 & 2,” which was released in the United States under the title “Blue Is the Warmest Color,” was nominated for European Film and European Director, but it was shut out of the writing and acting categories.

“Broken Circle Breakdown”is being released in the U.S. by Tribeca Films.

Nominees in the top category, European Film 2013, were Italy’s “The Best Offer” and “The Great Beauty,” Belgium’s “The Broken Circle Breakdown,” France’s “La Vie D’Adele,” Germany’s “Oh Boy!” and the Spanish/France production “Blancanieves.”

Pedro Almodovar’s “I’m So Excited” received a nomination in the European Comedy category, along with Susanne Bier’s “Love Is All You Need,” Ricardo Milani’s “Welcome Mr. President!” and Vinko Bresan’s “The Priest’s Children.”

Several of the top nominees, including “Broken Circle Breakdown,” “The Great Beauty,” “Child’s Pose,” “Eat Sleep Die” and the documentary “The Missing Image,” are competing in this year’s Oscar race for Best Foreign Language Film. “Blancanieves,” “Anna Karenina” and “The Impossible” are among the films that, because of different U.S. and international release dates, were eligible for Oscars last year.

Acting nominees included Keira Knightley for “Anna Karenina,” Naomi Watts for “The Impossible,” Toni Servillo for “The Great Beauty” and Veerle Baetens and Johan Heldenbergh for “The Broken Circle Breakdown.”

The European Film Academy is made up of almost 3,000 film professionals. Director Wim Wenders currently serves as president.

Winners will be announced at a ceremony in Berlin on Dec. 7.
