Outside her body in a coma, Moretz must choose life or death, knowing that her family has died but the boy she loves is waiting by her side
The latest trailer for “If I Stay” spotlights the romantic relationship at the heart of Chloe Grace Moretz‘ dilemma. In the film, she is an aspiring cellist with a world of opportunity who falls in love with a rock musician, portrayed by Jamie Blackley.
While her mother worries what love could do to her prospects, those concerns become irrelevant when a horrific car crash kills Moretz’ entire family, leaving her in a coma. The movie then follows her as she has an out-of-body experience, watching doctors try to save her, and friends and family visit her in the hospital.
She must choose whether to fight for life when her family is gone, or allow herself to die. The choice becomes even more painful when the boy she fell in love with arrives at the hospital. He'd previously told her he couldn't write songs about things that make him happy, and thus had written no songs about her.
Now, he has a song for her. But even she acknowledged it may not be enough to save her.
Based on the young adult novel of the same name by Gayle Forman, “If I Stay” was adapted for the screen by Shauna Cross and R.J. Cutler, who also directed the film. Produced by Denise Di Novi and Alison Greenspan, the movie also stars Mireille Enos, Liana Liberato, Joshua Leonard, Jakob Davies, Lauren Lee Smith and Aaliyah O'Brien.
“If I Stay” will be released by Warner Bros. Pictures to theaters on Friday, Aug. 22.
