“Working class magician” shows his cheeky side as he stands between humanity and the supernatural forces lurking behind every corner
The latest trailer for NBC's “Constantine” put the spotlight directly on the titular character. Based on the “Hellblazer” series of comics from DC, John Constantine is described as a “working class magician,” as well as a detective and a con man. He may also be humanity's last hope against the supernatural forces of the underworld.
As portrayed by Matt Ryan, NBC's Constantine perfectly captures the sarcastic and roguish nature of the popular anti-hero. He doesn't make friends doing what he does, and it isn't pretty the way he does it, but he gets the job done.
The network has crafted a perfect Friday companion for their supernatural hit, “Grimm.” Both shows dabble in monsters and things that go bump in the night, though “Constantine” also bears a lot in common with The CW's “Supernatural.”
With hints already seen of artifacts from DC Universe characters like Dr. Fate, it remains to be seen if “Constantine” will tie into the larger DC Cinematic Universe either on the big screen, with “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” or on the small screen alongside CW shows “Arrow” and “The Flash,” or Fox's flashback series “Gotham.”
With “Constantine's” focus on the supernatural, the more traditional superhero properties may make for awkward bedfellows.
