“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” star Daisy Ridley has a powerful message about self-esteem, encouraging women to stop hiding behind perfectly crafted captions and full-make up selfies on Instagram.
“I woke up like this #nofilter #nomakeup,” the actress wrote on a photo of herself on Instagram. However, her caption read, “3 of these statements aren’t true … Social media is great but also a bit scary cause what people post is the most filtered, most carefully chosen and cleverly edited moments of their lives. And self esteem is a huge issue for people around the world.”
The 24-year-old actress added that although she doesn’t post no-make up selfies, she would like to because she wants to show the world who she really is.
“My skin isn’t great so I don’t post no make up selfies, much as I’d like to,” Ridley wrote. “I have a trainer urging me on in workouts and don’t include all the times I say ‘I can’t do it’ and I don’t smile all the time but I like to share the pictures where I am. But I actually do love myself, I try to think good thoughts always and am surrounded by the most wonderful people, so I’m keeping it balanced (like the Force, obvs).”
This isn’t the first time Ridley has spoken out about body image. In March, she responded to a fan who said she set “unrealistic expectations” for other women and that “real women have curves.”
Ridley’s first post said, “‘Real women’ are all shapes and sizes, all ethnicities, all levels of brave, have families, don’t have families. I am a ‘real woman’ like every other woman in this world.”
She deleted it shortly after because she realized she included the body-shamers Instagram handle, but posted another photo shortly after, writing, “Kindness isn’t going to cure the world of all its awfulness but it’s a good place to begin.”
