Actor and longtime political activist Ron Silver, 62, died Sunday after a long battle with cancer.

“Ron Silver died peacefully in his sleep with his family around him this morning,” said Robin Bronk, executive director of the liberal Creative Coalition, which Silver helped create. “He had been fighting esophageal cancer for two years and his family is making arrangements for a private service.”

Silver’s long career spanned stage, TV and movies, including roles in “Silkwood,” “Blue Steel,” and TV’s “Chicago Hope,” “Veronica’s Closet” and “West Wing.” He may have been best-known for his role as legal professor Alan Dershowitz in 1990’s “Reversal of Fortune.” He most recently hosted a public affairs talk show on Sirius satellite radio.

Once a self-identified lifelong Democrat, Silver moved from far left to radical right after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
