‘Trump Likes to Keep His Villains Close,’ Says Author of Book About POTUS, Bannon (Video)

“I think the fact that Bannon got top billing on the book was problematic,” Joshua Green says of his book “Devil’s Bargain”

Was Steve Bannon’s top billing over Donald Trump on a newly-released book cover partly to blame for his ouster as White House chief strategist?

On Monday night’s “Daily Show,” host Trevor Noah posed that question to author Joshua Green, whose much-talked about book, “Devil’s Bargain: Steve Bannon, Donald Trump, and the Storming of the Presidency” was released just weeks before Bannon stepped down from his White House post.

“I was told by the White House official, ‘Trump is not going to read your book, but he’s going to look at the cover and he’s going to see that Bannon’s name actually comes before Trump’s name on the book,’ which it does,” Green said. “Trump doesn’t like co-stars, and I think the fact that Bannon got top billing on the book was problematic.”

Green believes that people underestimate Bannon “because he comes from the political fringes. You know, he looks like a guy who drinks wine from a paper bag,” the senior national correspondent at Bloomberg Businessweek, said, “If you were a woman’s study major at Wellesley, he’s probably not your cup of tea, but if you’re a guy like Trump, this steak-eating real estate developer, this alpha male, it would make sense why they really clicked.”

And that connection isn’t about to end anytime so, Green says, noting that “Trump likes to keep his villains close by. Omarosa didn’t win ‘The Apprentice,’ but she never really went away. I don’t think Steve Bannon is going to go away either … This is sort of like the most incredible season of ‘The Apprentice’ so yes, he’ll keep him around and invite him back.”
