Mrs. Krabappel Will Be Retired After Marcia Wallace's Death, 'Simpsons' Producer Says

Marcia Wallace died of breast cancer 70 this week

Mrs. Edna Krabappel, the chain-smoking fourth grade teacher with a derisive laugh on “The Simpsons,” will be retired after more than two decades on the show, Executive Producer Al Jean said in a statement on Saturday.

The move follows the news that Marcia Wallace, the comedienne who gave voice to the character, died Friday at the age of 70.

“I was tremendously saddened to learn this morning of the passing of the brilliant and gracious Marcia Wallace,” Jean said in a statement. “She was beloved by all at ‘The Simpsons’ and we intend to retire her irreplaceable character.”

Mrs. Krabappel has been a fixture on the Fox sitcom since the second episode of the first season in 1990. Divorced and congenitally disaffected, she would endure a series of romantic and professional misadventures, including getting fired for being drunk on the job and having a relationship with the wholesome Ned Flanders.

In the lead-up to the show's 25th season, Jean teased that an iconic character would be killed off, telling reporters that the actor playing the character won an Emmy for playing that character, which Wallace did in 1992. However, he said he was not referring to Mrs. Krabappel.

“Marcia's passing is unrelated and again, a terrible loss for all who had the pleasure of knowing her,” Jean said.

In addition to “The Simpsons,” Wallace spent six seasons playing Bob Newhart's daffy receptionist on “The Bob Newhart Show.”

sad for this is the second time due to death of the performer the simpsons had to retire some characters. first time phil hartmans murder. but its better to retire the character then try to replace the actress due to how well she did the character. which also means ned is a widow again

That doesn't mean they'll kill Edna off. It's possible the two could divorce off-screen or something.

      • demoncat_4

true or edna could wind up with a job in another state and ned doesn't want to leave so she splits. for no doubt the producers will come up with the perfect way to retire edna. for the character who may die later my guess is comic book guy or patty or thelma

I kind of doubt that they'll divorce. That would (I think) involve too much of Edna's character on screen. Unless they do something cheesy like what South Park did with Chef, the best way to handle it would be to have something happen off-screen and have Ned find out about it over the phone or something like that.

What happened to Chef? Last night I found out that Kyle's Mum and Da were divorced… I guess we are behind the times in Australia.

          • Brian Hartman

Isaac Hayes, who did the voice for Chef, left the show because of an episode that mocked Scientology. They did an episode afterwards where they killed him off, using clipped-together voice recordings from Hayes to voice the character.

I would like them to do a special episode where Ned finds out Edna got into some freak accident and at the end have the funeral. When the screen goes to credits have a “in memory of” credit for Marcia.

You really want Ned to lose another lover? How cruel. I love it.

      • jerbear

No, but it is the best ending since there has to be one. It will be more natural than some of the other idiot ideas I have read below. Such as: she suddenly moves away

        • Emily Hill

Wait wait how the hell would she move away since she's married to Ned without having Ned move away now I hate for Ned to lose another wife to deaths hand but I rather that than her moving away

          • jerbear

            that is what I said

The death of the voice star doesn't mean the character should be retired anymore than a death of a writer means that characters should be retired. After all, the writers put more into the characters than any actor could ever accomplish. And as for the voice quality, many living actors are dubbed by voice impersonators in television and movies on a daily basis.

    • CraigInPhoenix

Obviously the writers feel differently from you here.

      • astralislux

Writers aren't producers. The producers — who are not writers — think it's best to retire an animated character in The Simpsons when one of its voice actors dies.

        • CraigInPhoenix

On television, the writers ARE the producers. Al Jean, the showrunner and guy quoted in this article, has written 18 episodes since 2005 and is the lead writer.

          • astralislux

Not true. Most writers for television are not the producers. There are few exceptions, though, including Al Jean who has written 18 out of around 160 episodes.

Loved her she was on Match Game a lot too. I saw her at a play in Los Angeles and her face was very round similar to when Jerry Lewis developed a hamhead Pregnazone?

There will be an episode dedicated to Ms. Krabapple. It will be a retirement party. Ned explains her absence by announcing she has left Springfield to take care of her ill mother and that he will be joining her. Ive heard by mid season this new season.
Ive heard the iconic character killed off will be Apu.

Who will be Bart's new teacher, or is this the end of classroom scenes, with less appearances of Milhouse, Nelson, Martin, the twins, and the rest of Bart's classmates. Why don't they just kill Hoover off too, since she never delivered anything good to the series (or to any of the Simpson 5). She's just another smack in the face to Lisa (when she least deserves it).
