Legendary Entertainment has closed a deal for Oscar winning writer Eric Roth to pen the script for the upcoming film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s “Dune,” one of the bestselling novels of all time, TheWrap has learned.

The film will be directed by Denis Villeneuve, who most recently directed “Arrival,” which was nominated for eight Academy Awards including Best Director.

Set in the distant future, Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides, whose family accepts control of the desert planet Arrakis. As the only producer of a highly valuable resource, control of Arrakis is highly contested among the noble families. After Paul and his family are betrayed, the story explores themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship to nature as Paul leads a rebellion to restore his family’s control of Arrakis.

The project will be produced by Mary Parent, Cale Boyter and Villeneuve. Thomas Tull will executive produce along with Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt and Kim Herbert for the Frank Herbert estate and Kevin J. Anderson will serve as a creative consultant.

Roth won an Oscar for 1994’s “Forrest Gump” and was nominated for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “Munich,” and “The Insider.”

Roth is represented by CAA and Jackoway Tyerman Wertheimer Austen Mandelbaum Morris & Klein.

Villeneuve received an Oscar nomination for Best Director for “Arrival.” His next project, “Blade Runner 2049,” was incredibly well received at this year’s CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

Villeneuve is represented by CAA and Claude Girard Agency.

Variety first reported the news of Roth’s involvement.
