The fact that his character, Eddie, was killed off in Season 1 is just a minor detail

When “The Flash” returns for its third season on Jan. 24, will Eddie Thawne come to Iris’ rescue and save her from a tragic end?

That’s not without possibility, considering Rick Cosnett took to social media Monday and announced his return as Eddie on the hit CW series: “Hate to tease you but now I can say it: I’m coming back on #TheFlash.”

Cosnett played Detective Eddie Thawne in Season 1, Iris’ love interest and an ancestor of the show’s big villain Reverse Flash, who’s born in the future. In the season finale, Eddie sacrificed his own life to prevent his evil descendant Eodard Thawne from being born.

Eddie being dead is just a minor detail that showrunner Aaron Helbing has undoubtedly figured out.

Bringing characters back from the dead is no big deal in the Arrowverse — how, exactly, they plan to do that for Eddie remains to be seen.

The team at The CW are keeping the means to Cosnett’s return close to the vest, at this early stage in the game, but since we’re talking sci-fi here, he’ll most likely be playing a version of his character from another universe, or it could have something to do with Flashpoint.

And, of course, there’s always time travel. Mid-Season 2, Barry traveled back in time and persuaded Eddie to record a goodbye video for Iris, who was still mourning his death.

Any way you slice it, fans of the show seem to be on board with the idea.

“The Flash” returns on Jan. 24 at 8 p.m. on The CW.
