Veteran TV reporter Bill Carter made his first appearance as a CNN contributor Friday.

Carter, who was a reporter for the New York Times for two decades before accepting a voluntary buyout in December, will comment on media and TV for the network.

In his first interview, Carter chimed in on Brian Williams‘ first interview about his scandal and suspension.

Carter noted Williams avoided using the word lied: “I think he’s having a lot of trouble using that word.”

In December, Carter said he faced a “really wrenching and agonizing decision” when accepting a buyout from the Times, but couldn’t pass it up.

“I went through a long process, but I couldn’t square passing up what amounts to the best kind of severance at a newspaper job.”
