Bill Hader‘s comedy pilot “Barry” has been picked up to series at HBO.

Hader co-wrote and executive produced the pilot with Alec Berg (“Silicon Valley”). The comedian stars in and directed the pilot as well.

The show centers on Hader as an ex-Marine who works as a low-rent hitman in the Midwest. Lonely and dissatisfied in his life, he begrudgingly travels to Los Angeles to kill someone and ends up finding an accepting community in a group of eager hopefuls within the LA theater scene.

The pilot cast also featured Henry Winkler, Stephen Root, Sarah Goldberg, Anthony Carrigan and Glenn Fleshler.

Filming for the series will take place in 2017 in Los Angeles.

Hader recently co-created and co-starred in the IFC series “Documentary Now!” with Fred Armisen, and had a guest appearance on the Fox comedy “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” starring fellow “SNL” alum Andy Samberg.
