After thrilling critics and indie film fans with the Best Picture Oscar-nominated “Hell or High Water,” director David Mackenzie and stars Chris Pine and Ben Foster are on the verge of reuniting for a Netflix project that will take them from the small towns of Texas to the cold highlands of Scotland.

The project, titled “Outlaw King,” will be written and directed by Mackenzie in his first major project since wrapping “Hell or High Water.”  The film will tell the tale of Robert the Bruce, a famed Scottish monarch who to this day is a national hero for leading the Scots to victory in the First War of Scottish Independence in the 14th century.

Pine is slated to play Robert while Foster will play his loyal right hand man, Sir James Douglas. The project will be a personal one for Mackenzie, as he is Scottish.

Production is set to begin in Scotland in August. Gillian Berrie is producing with Anonymous Content’s Richard Brown and Steve Golin, with the project becoming the first major venture for Netflix’s original film division since producer Scott Stuber was hired as its head.

“Hell or High Water” premiered at Cannes last year and went on to receive four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Pine can next be seen this June opposite Gal Godot in “Wonder Woman,” while Foster is slated to appear alongside Christian Bale in the Old West period drama “Hostiles.”
