Affair Ball: ESPN Suspends Analyst Over Fling with Assistant
Not this again.
ESPN has suspended Steve Phillips, a baseball analyst and former general manager of the New York Mets, after an affair he had with a 22-year-old production assistant – and its messy aftermath -- was exposed by the New York Post.
“We were aware of this and have already taken appropriate action,” ESPN said in a statement. “We have no further comment.”
The duration of Phillips’ suspension is at a least week, a source at the network said.
Phillips, 46, told police in Wilton, Connecticut that he had an affair with the woman, Brooke Hundley, who he said became enraged when he ended the relationship this summer. "I have extreme concerns about the health and safety of my kids and myself," he said in a statement to police.
Phillips’ wife said Hundley threatened her repeatedly, via voicemails, text messages and this letter. (The wife has filed for divorce.)
If you’re into this sort of thing, this (and this and this) are required, salacious reading.
This isn’t the first time ESPN has faced a sex-related scandal involving its on-air talent. In 2006, Harold Reynolds, another baseball analyst, was fired for alleged sexual harassment of a female employee. (Reynolds maintained his innocence, saying, "I gave a woman a hug and I felt like it was misinterpreted"; he filed a wrongful termination suit against the network, which was settled last year.)
Reynolds is now an analyst for the MLB Network.

JimBeau>>Another fine contributor to race relations. How about Barkley and Irvin and other black analysts screwing up and coming back? Wouldn't you make the case that it's easier
to fire a white man as it's less 'racial baggage' ?
Letterman has hosted his show for 16 years and it's not about him being 'fired'. You don't replace an entire show because a guy in entertainment does what most men in entertainment do.
Steve didn't harass the girl in this case whereas ESPN covered their asses because they were scared that they'd be seen as pigs for having a 'womanizer/victimizer' on the show. I didn't agree with it at the time but it's not the same as one man cheating. Besides, what proof do we have that he will stay a long time?
It's silly to cry about race when black men with guns, in the nfl, or those who kill animals, get 2nd chances. This country bends over backwards to give 2nd chances but, as usual, men like you instead of seeing it with eyes open continue to spread hate and division.
But I grew up in the Lower East Side way back when and lived in Harlem so it's nothing new to me.

Nice move Stevie! Hope your wife tells you "analyze this."
How long do you think it will be before Brookie starts to show her strike zone to someone smarter and younger?
Please don't bring the Church into this. In case you forgot, we're all responsible for our actions.

Deadspin, which had received an anonymous tip on the subject but didn't report it, is now openly publishing all the emails they have received about the overwhelming culture of sexual harassment at ESPN:

ok. Harold Reynolds gets fired in 2006 for hugging a woman at a restaurant, who worked for ESPN, and Steve Phillips gets a one week pass. Same Steve has a rap sheet dating back 11 years for the same type of behavior (having affairs with multiple women while employed at the Mets). Oh yes, did I mention when David Letterman’s illicit affairs with her assistant became public, what price did he pay for his actions, he joked about it all the way to the bank.
I see the parity here and how these companies inspire confidence in equal treatment under the law. If you are a white male and do these things, its ok, otherwise, you're **** screwed.
