‘Jane The Virgin’ Star Brett Dier on Jane and Michael’s Future (Video)

“I think in his head, he’s like no matter what, I’m going to be OK, but then he gets to the table and it all goes to hell,” CW actor says of upcoming showdown

“Jane The Virgin” may have finally resolved its love triangle by having Jane and Michael declare their love for each other, but things won’t come easy for the newly reunited couple.

In this clip (above) from Monday’s all new episode, Jane (Gina Rodriguez) and Michael (Brett Dier) try to apologize to Rafael (Justin Baldoni) for previous events, but things don’t exactly turn out the way they hoped.

“At this point, Michael’s had a lot of time to reflect on that time he punched Rafael in the mouth, which was pretty intense but also pretty fun to do,” Dier told TheWrap of the scene. “I love Justin, but it felt good to finally punch Rafael in the face. [laughs] So he’s had a long time to reflect on that, and he feels extremely guilty about it. He’s matured since then, a lot.

“At this point, he’s going, ‘I’ve been thinking about this a lot, and I need to apologize to this guy and I’m going to do it right.’ I think in his head, he’s ‘like no matter what, I’m going to be OK,’ but then he gets to the table and it all goes to hell. Obviously Rafael is not going to forgive him that easily,” the actor said.

Below, Dier talks about what obstacles Jane and Michael will face next now that they’re giving it another shot.

TheWrap: Congrats on Team Michael prevailing once again!
Brett Dier: Yes, it’s about time!

How long had you known Jane and Michael would be getting back together?
Twelve hours. [laughs] I’m serious, they don’t tell you anything.

So when you got the script …
I was excited for Michael because I just want something good to happen to him, finally. Nothing ever happens to him other than just stress. So I’m glad to see him smiling.

The last time Jane chose Michael, it immediately fell apart again. Will it be more permanent this time?
That’s something that I honestly don’t know. I know that [showrunner] Jennie [Urman] enjoys making you think one thing and then flipping it almost instantly. So that’s not something I even know. So all I can do is hope Michael stays happy for more than a week.

How’s the Michael/Rafael relationship going to shake out?
I think it’ll have tension for a while, for sure. It’s something that Michael, now that he’s won, he’s got the girl — for now, it’s easier for him … He’s had a lot of time to reflect on this. Michael’s going to try and make it work, and for right now Rafael’s going to be pissed off still a little bit. There’s a scene coming up with Michael and Rafael in a car together without Jane. I don’t know if you’ve ever been trapped with someone you were super, super uncomfortable with, but that’s kind of the vibe with Michael and Rafael for now.

Obviously this is a telenovela so it won’t be smooth sailing for Jane and Michael even though they just got back together. What’s the next big drama they’re going to face?
There’s the drama with Rafael because he’s the baby’s father, that’s going to be a tough situation. They’ve been through so much together, Jane and Michael, and they haven’t spoken about it yet, so I think that’s going to be a thing. But like you said, it’s a telenovela, some things will just pop out of nowhere, who knows what that will be. There’s not too much happiness for the characters, there’s always something going on that’s extremely intense, so there’s a lot of that.

What kind of stepfather will Michael be to Mateo?
I think he’ll be a great one. He’s always wanted to have a kid, until the events in the pilot where she gets pregnant by someone else by mistake, which is insane! He wasn’t expecting that, but before that he’s always wanted to have a baby. He’s had a lot of time to get over what happened and he’s ready to be a good stepfather and be there for Mateo and Jane as best he can.

Sin Rostro just died, how’s the rest of that going to play out for Michael’s investigation?
Well there’s still Mutter still out there, who either killed Sin Rostro or didn’t kill Sin Rostro, we have no idea. All I know is there’s even a more notorious boss out there. There’s Sin Rostro and then potentially someone who killed Sin Rostro so that gets even more intense. Mutter could be a big problem. And then maybe Rafael and Michael may have to work together. It’s all related to his family, so maybe that will be a thing, but that might not work at all. It could be a horrible, horrible situation.

“Jane The Virgin” airs Mondays at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
