‘Jem and the Holograms’ First Trailer: Perils of Fame Gets a Ke$ha Makeover (Video)

Jon M. Chu’s live action take on classic cartoon sees hard lessons on path to stardom

The first trailer for Universal Pictures’ take on beloved 80’s cartoon “Jem and the Holograms” has hit, and director Jon M. Chu is showcasing a series of modern influences from Ke$ha and Lady Gaga to the dark glamour of “Black Swan.”

The live-action telling stars “Sharknado” actress Aubrey Peeples as the eponymous Jem, an introvert teen living with her aunt (Molly Ringland), sister and foster siblings (Stefanie Scott, Hayley Kiyoko, and Aurora Perrineau).

The guitar-strumming Jem is content scribbling song lyrics in a journal until one of her housemates uploads a clip to YouTube that explodes in views and lands her and her assembled band of kin — The Holograms — in the office of a cynical Hollywood record label run by a perfectly blunt Juliette Lewis.

Prominently billed as a project from the producers of “Pitch Perfect,” expect Jem (original incarnation below) to rock in theaters this December.
